Consider your introduction to World Music and Cultures through a professionally trained ensemble that knows and does it all: Miami World Percussion Orchestra (formerly Miami Steel & Percussion Orchestra) is comprised of dedicated musicians from all over the world. Its intent is on performing, educating, composing, arranging, and preserving the World Drum and Percussion instruments. Traveling exhibit/museum of obscure instruments and a library of written music go along with embarking on new and innovative musical genres. The orchestras's wide range of styles, instrumentation and repertoire includes: Bahamas Goombay Junkanoo; Cuban Mambo; Mexican Marimba; African Mbira and Drums; Ragtime/Jazz/Swing; Dominican Merengue; Brazilian Samba; Tropical Wood Xylophone; Jamaican Reggae; Trinidadian Steel Pans; USA Street Drumming; Russian Classsical; Japanese Taiko drums; Indonesian Gamelan; Scottish battle drums; Polish Oktoberfest Polka, American Indian Tribal drumming, Stomp style pieces, electronic percussion, music from outer space, and much more. Based in South Florida and founded in 1994 by artistic director Brad Watson (contact: 305-OK-1-BEAT) the Miami World Percussion Orchestra has performed concerts in nearly every conceivable South Florida venue, from concert halls, Organs Bowl parades, Key West Fantasy Fest, patriotic celebrations, street carnivals, orchid festivals, art shows, libraries, museums, sacred concert series including the Spire Concert Series of the 1st Presbyterian Church and the Iternational Concert Series of the St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Miami. The ensemble has been voted repeatedly BEST CARIBBEAN BAND by New Times Magazine, and TALENT DESERVING RECOGNITION by the Folkloric Arts Guide. Other than percussion instruments are featured at designated concerts, such as the violin played by guest artist SHASHA from Chungdu, China. Shasha is a master of many styles and in addition to her classical training also excells in Chinese Traditional, American Jazz, and Irish Fiddling.
